After breakfast, we'll embark on a two-hour drive to the northeast, with our first stop being the 10th-century capital of Koh Ker. This ancient city is known to have over 200 temples within its boundaries, but only 96 have been discovered so far. Most of our morning will be spent at just one temple, Prasat Thom, much of which is partially buried.
The number of visitors varies, but they are always low, meaning it's not uncommon to have the site entirely to yourself. At the far end of Prasat Thom, there's a towering pyramid that resembles Mayan or Inca architecture, making for an awe-inspiring sight. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch at the temple area before exploring the surrounding temples further.
As we head back towards Siem Reap, we'll make a stop at Beng Mealea, another lesser-visited temple that's similar in size to the famous Angkor Wat, both built by Suryavarman II. Beng Mealea is engulfed by the jungle and has minimal restoration work, allowing visitors to imagine what it was like for early explorers discovering these temples for the first time.
Finally, we'll return to Siem Reap in the late afternoon, after experiencing Cambodia's ancient history and architectural wonders.
